The Audubon Zoo Attractions
The zoo attractions at the
Audubon Nature Institutes Zoo
are often overlooked by many. Not really overlooked by the people at the zoo, but overlooked when talking about it. Let me explain.
When you are at the zoo, you can’t help but enjoy the many extra attractions that are available for the public such as the Great gift shop, the Zoofari Café, The great Endangered Species Carousel, the brand new Rock climbing wall, the cafes in the Louisiana Swamp section, or the infamous swamp train.
Obviously the animals are great to see, but there are other things to do while at the zoo that you can spread it out into an all-day family and friend event. People that have been to the zoo often enjoy these extra zoo attractions but seldom talk about them when describing the zoo to other friends, family, or potential zoo-goers.
Here I will let you in on some of the attractions that you should see and check out while visiting the Audubon Zoo, but first… here is a table showing you the low prices for the extra attractions and/or rides:

*NOTE* $10.00 per person for the “one-time” combo if you are interested in doing the Carousel, The Swamp Train, and the Rock Climb
The Endanger Species Carousel
The Endangered Species Carousel is one of the oldest of the zoo attractions and is mainly set for the youngsters in the children’s zoo area. It is extremely colorful and has many of the traditional as well as modern animals to ride that all the little boys and girls should enjoy.
It is a great site to see as far as how colorful it is and also it’s surrounding flowers, trees, bricks and sidewalks. There was a lot of hard work put into this area with a lot of maintenance to keep up with so that the visitors of the zoo would enjoy all of the beautiful scenery.
The Rock Climb
The Rock Climb is new to the zoo attractions to the
Audubon Zoo
and in located nearly in the center of the Zoo close to the Carousel. You get two tries to reach the top and ring the bell and once you have made it to the top, you have one of the best views of the entire zoo in a little different aspect. If you look in the right spot, you may be able to see the
sea lions
playing.
It is a great outdoor experience and loads of fun for the family. They will be monitored by trained professionals that the Zoo has hired to make sure everyone stays safe in their Rock Climb.
If you plan to try the rock climb you should be prepared. You must have no open-toed shoes such as sandals, or flip flops. Also, the weight limit on the Rock Climb is set to 250 lb. If you meet these criteria, then you should have no problems.
The Infamous Swamp Train
The swamp train has many stops along the path but does travel around the perimeter of the zoo, therefore, if you don’t feel like walking... pick up your ticket at the
Swamp Train
Exhibit and hop aboard. It will leave from these two places every 30 minutes so if you miss your ride… no worries… it will be back in about half an hour.
The Zoofari Cafe
This café is new also to the zoo attractions but is becoming extremely popular fast. It is a great place to sit down for lunch and escape the heat for a little while. It is also a good place to just stop in to have a snack, if that is what you are after.
If the weather is nice in
New Orleans
and you would enjoy staying outside, then they have tables set up with umbrellas right outside that you are more than welcome to sit at and rest for awhile and enjoy you lunch, snack, or beverage.
The Gift Shop
The Gift shop has just about any souvenir that you would expect from being in the
southern swamps.
As you are walking out of the zoo, it is located to your right side, right at the gates. You can get cameras, shirts, hats, jewelry, games, and the list goes on and on. It doesn’t hurt to at least stop in and look.
