The Audubon Zoo …
The Audubon Zoo, which is part of the Audubon Nature Institute, is among the best family-oriented places to visit in the southern part of
Louisiana.
Not only that but, it is among the top ranked zoos in the entire United States. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, many of the animals in the zoo where relocated to other nature institutes, along the Gulf Coast. They have all returned and doing well.
There were a few places in the Audubon zoo that needed re-construction, following the storm but from personal experience, they are back up and running well, and the
zoo attractions
are as beautiful as ever.
There are a vast amount of animals and creatures that reside at the Audubon Zoo. There are all sorts of exhibits, and “up close and personal”
shows
that are presented by the experts that are employed with the Nature Institute. From the extremely
Sea Lions
and Primates, to the more laid back Lions and Tigers, you will always be able to catch some action with the whole family.

Sections of the Nature Institute
The Audubon Zoo is made up of different sections that correspond with different parts of the world. The
Louisiana Swamps
, Asia, and Africa are the most popular, with smaller
exhibits
like the Komodo dragon, the Reptile Encounter, birds, and insect exhibits are all available to the public to admire. Not to forget that the
Sea Lions
have their own section, which is probably the most popular of the entire zoo. It is called the Odenheimer Sea Lion Pool.
There is also a small playground for the kids, including a
carousel
to ride. Many places to eat and get drinks that are along the paths throughout the institute. You will be given a map at the beginning of you tour that will show you where everything is so that you can pick out what you want to do, in the order that you want to do it. “The Louisiana Swamp” has a gift shop and a place for tourists to try out the Cajun cuisine, to get the full effect of being in the south.
There is also a simulator ride
simulator ride
close to the carousel that you can try out and is very fun to enjoy with the whole family. If at any time, you don’t feel like walking… catch the
swamp train
ride that goes all throughout the zoo.
